Hastati (light infantry)

The pilum wielding Hastati are light infantry unit available to the Romans in the Classical Age. They are weak but also cheap and are super effective against cavalry. To keep them alive long enough, it is best to have a handful of Troopers to support them from other infantry units who will defeat them 1v1. Once you reach the Heroic age, the Hastati will be better off replaced by the Legionary unless your opponent focuses heavily on cavalry.

These soldiers were usually newly recruited and inexperienced but also coming from wealthy families. They carried a scutum and wore a cuirass and simple galea both made of bronze. What is notable about the galea is that it was adorned with that feathers that made the soldiers appear taller and therefor more intimidating. The Hastati would be the first to face the enemy in melee combat and could retreat behind the more experienced soldiers known as the Princeps whenever the odds looked bad or if they were simply exhausted. They also normally carried a gladius but the Hastati in Age of Mythology are limited to the pilum.
