Mythology:
The third century BC saw fierce naval competition arise all across the Mediterranean. In the west, the Romans and Carthaginians struggled for control of the sea. High cost and the strains of war may have caused them to focus on building galley types that they knew would be of use in battle. Both their navies adopted the Quiquereme (or Pentereme) as its standard vessel, which offered more space for up to 120 marines as well as missile weapons and the Roman boarding-bridge called the corvus. They were heavy ships and required roughly 300 oarsmen to row them. The men were arranged in groups of five stationed over three banks of oars, so the top two were pulled by a pair of men, while only one operated the bottom oar. The Quinquereme also had a large square sail.
