Geb - River Encounter

Description

Animals from the Savannah regularly go visit the rivers to get a drink whenever it gets really hot. This can lead to some interesting encounters aside from predator and prey. Here we have two herbivores, the Yellow Sentinel and three Terrigenas. The Yellow Sentinel just sent the three smaller Cranidons running for cover among the tall grass. You'd be scared too if a creature much larger than yourself was flicking its sharp tongue at you.

Scientific Name: Excubitor flavis
Common Name: Yellow Sentinel

Phylum:
Cranidon
Class: Patescotergum
Order: Porroguttervultus

These are solitary relatives of the Dazzler that prefer the hottest regions of the Savannah. They are highly territorial and short tempered towards other herbivores and have been observed stomping nests of other herbivores. However, they will flee from predators as they have no means of defense. The crest on the back of their head is only for regulating body temperature and provides little defense due to its fragility.

Their large paws are somewhat reminiscent of a lion's but lack claws. The soft pads help the Yellow Sentinel travel the Savannah without making a sound. Their sharp tongue can slice through a blade of tough grass like a samurai sword. Their diet consists primarily of tough plants filled with water. To help cool down further, Yellow Sentinels constantly drink water whenever the opportunity arrives. The design of their snout helps detect the slightest sign of moisture. They will even travel long distances in the grass after heavy rain to collect water on their fur which is then licked off. To cope with this constant intake, they have powerful kidneys which are in turn very nutritious. Predators that regularly hunt this animal often go for these organs first.

The Yellow Sentinel reaches an average length of 5 meters at maturity. Upon its initial observation, this animal was believed to be a triped. Turns out the first animal encountered merely had a mutation. It was a miracle that the juvenile survived long enough to grow up to 3 meters. Its current fate is unknown. Yellow Sentinels have a short tail like the Crested Sentinel.

Name: Terrigenas
Name meaning: Terrifying Cheeks
Common Name: Puffer Cheeks

Phylum: Cranidon
Class: Patescotergum
Order: Breviguttervultus

These relatives of the Advenamus (fav.me/d5hgbzf) also prefer warmer climates but always remain in small groups for protection. When threatened, they will raise their hair like a cat, stand on their hind legs and expand the size of their cheeks to appear bigger than they really are. This earned them the common name of Puffer Cheeks from the public. Their long snout helps them reach berries, their favourite food. Tongues can evolve to extend at great lengths, but having a long strong snout helps prevent exposing too much of a muscle that can bleed a lot if injured. Terrigenas can grow up to the size of a beaver.

There are other organisms in this picture too.

Name: Fire Trees

These white and grey trees are scattered around the Savannah. Their success is attributed to the appearance of their leaves that mimic the color and movement of a grass fire, tricking animals to stand back. The leaves remain red and orange in spring and summer as well as autumn. They need to deceive herbivores to protect the giant egg sack/cocoon that grows on its trunk. That sack contains hundreds of zygotes that are preparing themselves for flight. Of course, the zygotes are vulnerable once they are carried by the wind and come within range of gametovores.

Name: Fish Berry Bush

They are instantly recognizable bush with three branches and bronze colored bark. The berries that are shaped like Earth's fish contain the seeds of this plant. Unlike the Fire Tree, the seeds need to be consumed to create new plants. The berries emit a sweet scent that signal their presence to herbivores. They are also delicious and contain many nutritious properties, including some that help wounds heal faster. It is essentially the healthiest candy in the universe. The seeds in turn resist stomach acids and spread via the herbivore's droppings.

Name: Mentiomarmor
Common name: Fake Rock

This is a seroinsolitus that lives near rivers of the Savannah and feeds on drifting seeds. They come in many different colors thanks to their pigment's ability to detect reflected light from nearby objects (usually rocks) and imitate it. This enables the organism to blend among other rocks. Even their sporangium, which is green colored, mimics the moss that grows on true stones.
