Nyx Pike
This is the largest predator currently known that lives in the dense fog layer on Lyell-3. Slowly flying alone through the mist, it constantly searches for small prey it can snatch with its extendable mouth. It regularly takes breaks from flapping its fins so that it can glide and carefully listen to the flight of smaller fish like animals. Once it hears a flock, it uses its powerful nose to track their movements.
Although they have no natural predators, they are occasionally blown upwards by geysers into the upper layers. Although they are tolerant of the warm mist which keeps their bodies damp enabling them to breathe, boiling water severly scalds them and sometimes tears the membrane of their fins. And in the dry air of the upper layer, they are unable to breathe properly, leaving them at the mercy of many oppurtunistic predators. Some scientists speculate that once vulnerable, the emmit a wheezing sound from their nose to purposely lure predator so that they can end their suffering.
It is unsure how Nyx Pikes give birth. It is possible that females trails a red egg sack behind her rear fins where an ombilical cord like structure supplies the embryos with food. Once the children are capable of flight, they emerge from the eggs fully independant and looking exactly like adults, except much smaller.
"This is the final piece of the sketch book I received as a gift from a coworker while working at Health Canada. As I gazing upon the last available page, I had to choose an ideal life form that would be an excellent conclusion to the book. Something that would bring the same feeling as the T4 Virus from the Robot Zoo book or the Tyrannosaurs Rex from different children's Dinosaur books. I decided to go through my archives and I realised that on the preview for Lyell-3's life forms (seen here: [link]), I neglected to include the Nyx Pike to the picture. As an apology to my creation, I gave it the honor of being the finale. Afterall, it is an intimidating predator if I do say so myself".
