Lyell-3 - Sucker Bug

Description

Sucker Bugs are one of the few insects on Lyell-3 that find their home within the fog layer of the forest. You wouldn't think that such a helpless creature the size of a paperclip would be able to survive in a territory filled with predatory flying fish-like creatures. However, Sucker Bugs have few predators because they are more useful as cleaning agents than as crunchy snacks.

These little brown haired animals are usually found clinging to a tree trunk feeding on dripping plant sap, flower nectar, animal blood, animal feces and other organic matter that taints the bark of the massive plants. When they sense that an animal is passing close by, they use their powerful hind limbs to propel themselves over great distances that would rival Earth's ticks. Once they make a landing, they stay attatched to their ride using forelimbs equipped with suckers to prevent themselves from slipping off the wet skins animals. Also, the underside of their abdomen is lined with velcro like hairs to hang onto the few animals that have hair.

One safely latched onto the larger creature, the Sucker Bugs monitor the whole skin surface looking for anything to eat: parasites, dirt, pollen, shedding skin, anything that can cause drag or disease and make flying harder for the animal. Sucker Bugs feed using a long proboscis that is actually several mouth parts fused together which is surprisingly efficient at sucking up food.

"These animals are actually not inspired by any kind of insect from Petland. A clue to their origins comes from the fact that they live in the fog layer. They are actually inspired by the sucker fish that are used to clean fish tanks. I don't know when I chose to make them insects, maybe it was when I realised I didn't have many insect like animals yet. In the end, it's interesting to see an animal with features similar to ticks and mosquitoes, but that is completely harmless to other animals."

FUN FACTS:
:bulletred: Oddly enough, the hind limbs of Sucker Bugs have three digits instead of just one.
:bulletred: Similar to the Wooly Locust, the Sucker Bug's sound pouch is located on their abdomen.
